^{This private collection of etchings, trial proofs, and working impressions by Lilian Whitehead offers a rare insight into the artistic practice of one of Britain’s most accomplished early twentieth-century printmakers. Born in Bury, Lancashire, Whitehead studied at Bury School of Art, Manchester School of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art before exhibiting at leading institutions including the Baillie Gallery, the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Scottish Academy.}

^{In 1921, aged just twenty-seven, Whitehead became the first woman to receive the prestigious Rome Scholarship in Engraving at the British School at Rome. During her years in Italy, she travelled extensively through Rome, Orvieto, Subiaco, Perugia, and Siena, producing preparatory drawings, studies, and designs which later evolved into accomplished etchings and drypoints. Her works capture both the grandeur of Italian architecture and the intimacy of everyday life — from café interiors and musicians to street scenes and Roman monuments — reflecting a deeply observant and sensitive artistic eye.}
