SID COLIN COLLECTION - UP POMPEII!
The Sid Colin Collection - Up Pompeii! (1969-1970 BBC sitcom starring Frankie Howerd, created by Talbot Rothwell with episodes by Rothwell and Sid Colin) - Colin's personal archive of master scripts for the series. The collection includes:
- Series 1 master draft scripts (or partial draft scripts) for Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 & 6. Likely those of Talbot Rothwell's but it's likely Colin helped in some form given that these scripts feature his handwriting.
- Series 2 master draft scripts (or partial draft scripts) for Episodes 1 to 6 inclusive. Some featuring Colin's handwriting to the covers.
- Colin's handwritten notes for S2 Ep1 'The Legacy' - two sheets.
- two sheets in Colin's hand featuring the episode order (and original working titles) for the second series. 2 sheets.
- a brief handwritten sheet detailing the characters and their relationship to each other, in Colin's hand.
- further assorted pages of handwritten notes regarding the series, all in Colin's hand.
- a typed letter to Talbot Rothwell by persons unknown discussing Colin's work on some script pages.
- a letter from Rothwell to Colin dated 10th October 1969, seemingly unrelated to the series but mentioning sketches for Frankie Howerd. Signed by Rothewell to the conclusion 'Tolly'.
- typed story outlines for 'The Roman Army Game' episode and 'Ides Of March'.
- a later letter (1982) to Colin concerning him signing an agreement related to the series.
All housed in Colin's red card file. A unique archive of material relating to the creation of the classic BBC comedy series.
Sid Colin (1915–1989) was an English scriptwriter. He started as a guitarist with The Squadronaires before moving in to comedy. He created the successful TV sitcom ‘The Army Game’ (1957–1959). Colin often collaborated with fellow comedy writer Talbot Rothwell, notably co-writing the film ‘Carry On Spying’ (1964). During his career he wrote for many of the country’s biggest stars including Frankie Howerd, Peter Sellers, Hattie Jacques, Max Bygraves and many others. He passed away in 1989.

This auction contains a collection of items from the estate of 'On The Buses' actor Reg Varney, including several of his awards and scripts. The sale also features Part Two of the Ronald Wolfe collection, who co-wrote On The Buses, The Rag Trade and hundreds of other productions. Fans of the Carry On franchise will also find rare treasures as this sale includes the script collection of writer Sid Colin, who penned Carry On Spying, alongside Talbot Rothwell.
As usual we have some very special items relating to Only Fools & Horses, and one of our star lots is an original script used by actor Paul Barber (Denzil) for the moved-loved episode The Jolly Boy's Outing.
