Indian History - Subhas Chandra Bose (1897-1945) - patriotic note in blue ink, dated Bombay 31.12.31 (New Year's Eve), reading; 'Do you want the fragrance of the full-blown rose? If so, you must accept the thorns, Do you want the sweetness of the smiling dawn? If so, you must live through the dark hours of the night. Do you want the joy of liberty and the solace of freedom? If so, you must pay the price. And the price of liberty is suffering and sacrifice'. Clipped corners, 8cm x 12cm, approx. Such handwritten notes from Chandra Bose are extremely rare.
Subhas Chandra Bose (1897–1945) was a prominent Indian nationalist and freedom fighter known as Netaji (Respected Leader). Born into a wealthy Bengali family in Cuttack, he resigned from the prestigious Indian Civil Service in 1921 to join the freedom struggle. Bose rose to be a two-time President of the Indian National Congress, advocating for a militant approach to achieve complete independence, which put him at ideological odds with Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent methods. He founded the Forward Bloc after his resignation. During World War II, Bose escaped house arrest in India in 1941 and traveled to Germany and later Japan, seeking support from the Axis powers to overthrow the British. He took command of the Indian National Army (INA), also known as the Azad Hind Fauj, which was formed from Indian prisoners of war. He established a provisional independent Indian government in Singapore, proclaiming the famous slogan, "Give me blood, and I will give you freedom!" He died in a plane crash in Taiwan in 1945.
