Trials, divorce & violence against women. 1701 A Letter from a Peer to a Member of the House of Commons, about the Countess of Anglesey's Bill. Detailing the allegations of physical abuse by James Annesley, 3rd Earl of Anglesey to his wife, Lady Catherine Darnley, illegitimate daughter of James II by Catherine Sedley. Including detail on her bruises & violence during her pregnancy as witnessed by her maidservants. No printer stated, some leaves unopened to top edges, edgewear & age-toning to edges commensurate with age. An exceptionally scarce pamphlet in support of James Annesley, who died the year following the divorce's completion, while Lady Darnley went on to wed John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normandy. Divorce created enormous scandal at the turn of the 18th century, this being a particularly uncommon example brought about by the wife rather than the husband as law permitted. Unbound, 12pp, 4to.
