Porridge (1974–1977) is a classic British sitcom created by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, set in the fictional HMP Slade prison. It follows seasoned inmate Norman Stanley Fletcher (Ronnie Barker), who uses his wits to score "little victories" against the system and his nemesis, warder Mr. Mackay (Fulton Mackay). Fletcher takes the naive, first-time offender Lennie Godber (Richard Beckinsale) under his wing, creating a timeless comedy of defiance and survival.
From the collection of John Short, a well-known local collector in the Bristol area who amassed over 50,000 autographs in his lifetime. He began collecting signatures at stage doors in the 1960s right up until his death in 2022. His work as a Wrestling MC took him all over the world and wherever he went, his autograph book followed. He could often be found at the stage door of local theatres, circuses or book signings, and we estimate that he saw or attended over two-thousand plays, shows, talks and events in his lifetime. In the 1960s and 1970s he would visit London on a weekly basis to obtain autographs from those appearing in the West End. This unique archive, which is being sold without reserve, represents his life's work. (Part Two of his collection, focussed on Wrestling and Speedway, will be sold in early 2026).
Condition: condition may vary. Many autographs were stored securely in metal cabinets, others were not so fortunate and some show signs of damp / dust etc. Buyers are reminded for the need to satisfy themselves as to condition prior to bidding.
