DICKENS, CHARLES: 1843 A CHRISTMAS CAROL, FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE
Dickens, Charles. 1843 A Christmas Carol, In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas. London: Chapman & Hall. First edition, second issue. Published the same year as the first edition, first impression. With the following issue points, as called for by John Eckel, to determine this as a first edition, second issue: blue and red title page, blue half title and "Stave One" on the first page. Between the first and second issue of the book, wording on the first page was changed from "Stave I" to "Stave One", and the endpapers were changed from green to yellow.
Illustrated by John Leech with four hand-coloured plates, as called for. With two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. A scarce, early impression of one of Dickens' most important and popular works. Bound in the publisher's brown cloth, as is mentioned by Eckel in early editions, with other impressions bound in red. Very smart copy. (1)
