Italian History - Alexander Farnese (27 August 1545 – 3 December 1592) Italian noble and military leader, who was Duke of Parma, Piacenza and Castro from 1586 to 1592, as well as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1578 to 1592 - ALS, dated 28th July 1580, in Italian. Black ink, signed to the conclusion. Folded, some browning and staining, rough-cut edges. 33cm x 21cm, approx.
Alexander Farnese (1545–1592) was an Italian noble, Duke of Parma, and one of the most brilliant military commanders of the 16th century. As Governor of the Spanish Netherlands (1578–1592) for King Philip II of Spain, his combination of astute diplomacy and military genius was crucial. He successfully exploited divisions between the Catholic and Protestant provinces, winning back the southern provinces (modern Belgium) for Spain and Catholicism through a series of key sieges, most notably Antwerp in 1585. He also led military campaigns into France to support the Catholic League before his death.

Provenance: The Jan van Bree collection. Jan van Bree (1938-2024) was a Dutch native, and a prolific autograph collector. His collection began in 1957 when he wrote to the famous Italian singer Beniamino Gigli and received a handwritten reply. That one letter spurred Jan to write to as many famous people as possible, all over the world. From singers to scientists, actors to astronauts. Naturally, Jan also went autograph hunting in-person at major theaters in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Enschede. Hardly any event could pass without Jan obtaining a signature. In later years he also purchased autographs – usually of historical importance – from various trusted dealers and auction houses. His collection spanned around fifty albums, with many hundreds loose. He passed away in April 2024. His lifetime collection is offered here for sale without reserve.
