Dickens, Charles & Browne, Hablot Knight (illus.). 1859 A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. London: Chapman and Hall and at the Office of All the Year Round. First edition in book form, first issue with Smith's flaws present, including page 213 misnumbered as 113, B lacking on list of plates & no catalogue present. Publisher's blind stamped red cloth (first issue binding) with gilt titles to spine, extremities bumped and a touch worn, some chipping to the head & tail of the spine, boards discoloured and a touch worn, armorial bookplate of J. Teschemaker L.L.D. to front pastedown & pasted in contemp. ownership inscription of Mrs Bacon, Seafield & presentation slip to Teschemaker 'with Edgar's Best Love November 28th. Front hinge strained after ffep with frontispiece detaching, engraved half title; binding a touch shaken. Complete with frontispiece, engraved half title and all fourteen engraved plates by Phiz (plate op. 72 a little edgeworn & loose but present, occ. spotting to plates, frontispiece & plate opp. page 29 both complete with orig. tissueguard). A scarce first edition, first issue of Dickens' classic novel, the final of his works illustrated by H. K. Browne & opening with the memorable lines, 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...'. 8vo.
