THE RONALD WOLFE COLLECTION – HOLIDAY ON THE BUSES
The Ronald Wolfe Collection – Holiday On The Buses (1973 spin-off feature film) - a unique and important piece of British comedy history; Wolfe and Chesney's original typed master 'First Draft Storyline' draft script for what would eventually become Holiday On The Buses. The document carries the working title of 'Busman's Holiday' and is dated 23rd November 1972. 32pp, bound with a clip. The script features many of the larger plot points that would end up in the finished production, but also features a wealth of other scenes, plot devices and story arcs that were ultimately not used. The document is heavily amended by Wolfe, including ideas for lines, entire scenes crossed out and similar changes. Accompanied by Wolfe's original part-filled pocket notebook in which he noted initial ideas, gags and general notes relating to the film before typing his first draft. The notebook lacks its covers, but the working title 'Busmen's Holiday' is present. The collection is further complimented by the inclusion of an original Pontin's brochure from Camber Sands. Within this, Wolfe has highlighted some of the itinerary; some of which were used within the draft storyline. Pontin's Camber Sands was clearly the original intended filming location and is referenced throughout the draft, although production of the film was eventually undertaken at Pontins Prestatyn Sands, North Wales. Housed within a brown folder, featuring Wolfe's writing to the side 'Holiday On The Buses'. A unique archive of On The Buses memorabilia. (3)
Ronald Wolfe (1922-2011) was a British television, radio and cinema screenwriter, and one half of the Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney writing partnership. Wolfe wrote for some of the biggest stars in Britain from the 1950s to the 1990s, and had major success with the sitcoms The Rag Trade, Meet The Wife and On The Buses. In later life he taught comedy writing at City University, London. He passed away in 2011. The items being offered for sale in this special auction are direct from his estate, and represent an important archive of British comedy, television, and radio history.
