SID COLIN COLLECTION - HI GANG!

The Sid Colin Collection - Hi Gang! (BBC radio series 1940-1949, featuring Vic Oliver, Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels) - Colin's original rehearsal script for the 100th episode. Signed to the cover by many of the featured cast including: Michael Dennison, Christopher Stone, Valerie Hobson, Max Bacon, Vera Lynn, Stanley Black, Benny Lee, Fay Compton, Carroll Gibbons and others. All undedicated. Script recording date 30th April 1939. 28pp on white stock, appears complete. Bud Flanagan was original noted on the cast list but this has been crossed out, and his name has been similarly crossed out within, likely due to a last-minute lineup change. Unique piece of radio history.

Hi Gang! was a hugely popular BBC radio comedy and variety show that premiered in May 1940, coinciding with the Dunkirk evacuation, and ran until 1949. Starring American husband-and-wife duo Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, alongside Austrian comedian Vic Oliver, the programme was specifically conceived to boost public morale during World War II. Its light-hearted, transatlantic style and topical humour, which included making fun of figures like Hitler and "Lord Haw-Haw," made it an immediate and much-needed success with listeners across Britain. Its popularity later led to a spin-off film and the subsequent radio/TV hit, Life with the Lyons.

Sid Colin (1915–1989) was an English scriptwriter. He started as a guitarist with The Squadronaires before moving in to comedy. He created the successful TV sitcom ‘The Army Game’ (1957–1959). Colin often collaborated with fellow comedy writer Talbot Rothwell, notably co-writing the film ‘Carry On Spying’ (1964). During his career he wrote for many of the country’s biggest stars including Frankie Howerd, Peter Sellers, Hattie Jacques, Max Bygraves and many others. He passed away in 1989.
