19TH CENTURY TSAR NICHOLAS II KHODYNKA ENAMEL "CUP OF SORROWS"

19th century, 1896, Imperial Russia enamelled 'Cup of Sorrows' to commemorate the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II. Decorated with imperial symbols, including the Russian Romanov double headed eagle, geometric patterns and the date. Measuring approx. 10cm x 9cm.

This piece is known as the 'Cup of Sorrows' due to its tragic association with the Khodynka Tragedy, where over 1000 people died during a stampede while attempting to collect these cups at the coronation festivities on Khodynka Field, Moscow. Supposedly, the Tsar was much distressed by this awful event and wanted to cancel the evening's celebratory ball, his advisors persuaded him not to do so, and as a result, he became known as 'Bloody Nicholas'.
