ENGLISH BIBLES 1575 BISHOP'S BIBLE - WITH A WHOLE BOOKE OF PSALMES
Bishop's Bible 1575-1625. A scarce copy of this sixteenth century Bible. The Bishop's Bible was first issued in 1568 with the aim to replace the Great Bible and counter the influence of the Geneva Bible, which was becoming increasingly popular. This is the third edition, being the first edition in this size. Prior to this, the bible had been printed in a larger format, intended for lecturns, while this smaller copy was more practical for daily use. Comprised of six books, each with their own register. Lacking the overall title page and the title page of the first book. Title pages are present to the five other books. Containing the first part, without title page (A8-N6) The Seconde Parte of the Bible (Aa8-Tt8), The Thirde Parte of the Bible (Aaa8-Ttt6, Uu6), The Volume of the Bookes called Apocrypha (Aaaa8-Nnnn7), The Nevve Testament of our Saviour Jesus Christ (A8-R8), Whole Booke of Psalmes (A6-P1 [2]). The title pages for all parts state 1575, apart from the book of psalms which states 1625. Pages are misnumbered to the rear of The Thirde Parte, with the register running Aaa8-Ttt6, followed by Uu6. Lacking a few leaves to the rear of the Whole Booke of Psalmes. Bound in full calf. A interesting copy, with contemporary ink notations to a number of the pages from a John Reed, including inscriptions such as 'John Reed his books...given by his father", with the date 1691, among others. With a memorandum from the library at University College Hull thanking the previous owner of the bible for lending it out for their 1954 exhibition. (1)
