Periodicals. 1789 The Glasgow Mercury. Printed and sold by Robert Chapman and Alexander Duncan at their Printing Office. A large quantity of bound issues, covering from March 10th 1789 to November 24th 1789. An important & scarce historical Scottish paper, containing shipping records, details on house rentals and sales, even murders, as well as historical detail such as on the health of King George III, the newly inaugurated George Washington President of the United States, the onset of the French Revolution following Louis XVI's dismissal of Jacques Necker. Illustrated with woodcut vignettes throughout; advertisements throughout, some illustrated; half penny stamps to some leaves. Contemp. half calf, spine degraded & with loss and rubbing, extremities worn, front board loose, contemp. ownership inscription to front pastedown, pin holes to gutter throughout. Lacking some leaves, some leaves with damage incl. first leaf, final leaf finishing incomplete. Four 1922 newspaper clippings from the Glasgow Herald loosely inserted, each titled Gleanings from an Old Newspaper and recounting some of the more significant historical elements from the Glasgow Mercury. Large 4to.
