HISTORICAL - ALEXANDRE PETION - FATHER OF HAITI - SIGNED DOCUMENT

History - Alexandre Pétion (1770-1818) - a founding father of Haiti - 19th century order in Petion's hand, signed to the conclusion. Headed 'Republique D'Hayti' paper with crest to top. Order to Lieutenant Colonel Diego Chayler for an audience at Petion's house. Dated 1817. Some folds. 31cm x 20cm.

Alexandre Sabès Pétion (1770–1818) was a Haitian revolutionary and statesman, considered one of the country's founding fathers. Born a free mulatto in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, he was a key military leader during the Haitian Revolution, instrumental in defeating the French. After the assassination of Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1806, Pétion became the first President of the Republic of Haiti (1807–1818), governing the south while Henri Christophe ruled the north. Pétion is remembered as "Papa Bon-Cœur" for redistributing land to the poor peasantry and for providing crucial aid to Simón Bolívar, an act that secured Bolívar's promise to abolish slavery in South America.

Provenance: The Jan van Bree collection. Jan van Bree (1938-2024) was a Dutch native, and a prolific autograph collector. His collection began in 1957 when he wrote to the famous Italian singer Beniamino Gigli and received a handwritten reply. That one letter spurred Jan to write to as many famous people as possible, all over the world. From singers to scientists, actors to astronauts. Naturally, Jan also went autograph hunting in-person at major theaters in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Enschede. Hardly any event could pass without Jan obtaining a signature. In later years he also purchased autographs – usually of historical importance – from various trusted dealers and auction houses. His collection spanned around fifty albums, with many hundreds loose. He passed away in April 2024. His lifetime collection is offered here for sale without reserve.
