The necklace was purchased by then up-and-coming actress Suzanna Leigh in 1962 on the King’s Road in London. Shortly after she appeared in her first television role alongside Roger Moore in an episode of The Saint. This appearance, coupled with other work on various period shows and films eventually led to her being cast as Elvis Presley’s love interest, June ‘Friday’ Hudson in the 1966 film Paradise, Hawaiian Style. She wore her beloved 'good luck' necklace during the movie. Now, the necklace is going under the hammer in our TV & Film Memorabilia auction on June 30th, and world-wide interest is expected.
In Paradise, Hawaiian Style, Elvis plays ex-airline pilot Rick Richards who, along with his buddy Danny Kohana, decides to set up a helicopter charter business in Hawaii. His reckless flying and careless flirting with local women nearly scupper their business plans, and his secretary – played by Leigh – is far from impressed.
‘This is such a special piece of jewellery,’ says auctioneer Andrew Stowe. ‘For all intents and purposes, it is a fairly standard 1960s faux-pearl necklace, ordinarily not of great value. However, the fact it appeared on-screen with Elvis Presley makes it something extraordinarily special!’
The necklace was a favourite of Leigh’s and she wore it at every opportunity. As well as rubbing shoulders with Elvis, the necklace was also worn alongside Roger Moore in an episode of The Saint, and appeared in photographs at the premiere of Boeing Boeing alongside Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis.
‘This is one of those objects that I just wish could speak,’ adds Andrew. ‘It has been in the company of some of the world’s greatest entertainers, and is a real piece of Hollywood history. To hold something in my hand that has been worn in the presence of so many incredible performers gives me goose bumps.’
Suzanna Leigh was born in Berkshire in 1945 and she began working in films while still a young child. Her earliest roles were appearing as extras in several British productions. She changed her name to Suzanna Leigh after entering the world of film, whilst under the tutelage of her godmother, the actress Vivien Leigh. Suzanna passed away from cancer in 2017, in Florida. The necklace is being sold by her daughter, Natalia.
The auction takes place at our Bristol saleroom from 10am on Monday June 30th. Online bidding is available via our website, or bid in-person at our saleroom.
